Dr. Susan Bettis, Director of Training & Clinical Services in our counseling program, talks about finding your compatible career.

One good job is worth a year of therapy, maybe more.  From a very early age, we are asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” In our youth and childhood, dreams can run supreme. Before issues of financing college, finding a good apprenticeship, or funneling our most authentic self into the world of work, we have those lifelong dreams that are often lost or obliterated.

Community resources exist to help the job seeker with the “how” of a job search, like learning how to write resumes and succeed in interviews. But it’s the “what” that is a more challenging question. Career counseling and personal development that focus on finding our match, finding our niche, are hard to find and often expensive.

Finding the Work You Love

Starting in April, William Temple House will offer a special six-week class focusing on:

  • What are you good at?
  • What do you enjoy?
  • What do you get positively recognized for?

Utilizing Richard N. Bolles “What Color is Your Parachute?” career coach Laura Schlafly will educate and lead participants to find a direction for their lives in the world of work to bring joy and fulfillment to this element of life. When asked what is the most important thing in life, Freud said “to work and to love.” This course will help folks decide on a direction where they can love their work.
