William Temple House volunteers are integral to the continued success of the agency which May 3rd celebrated its 43rd anniversary of helping people in need. More than 200 volunteers each year selflessly commit their time, energy and skills.
William Temple House recently lost a dear volunteer. Dorothy B. Harris passed away at the age of 94. Her contributions spanned more than 5 years and her hand knit hats adorned many a child’s head.
Dorothy knit many of the warm winter hats distributed to schoolchildren clothed at William Temple House’s Children’s Clothing Closets in northwest Portland and Milwaukie. |

“Dorothy had the ability to take any yarn donations regardless of amount, color or weight and make the resulting hats look like they were made to a pattern specifically calling for these ingredients. She had everyone at St. Andrews scrounging up yarn. She was the |
culmination of a community project,” remembers Walt Myers from William Temple House North Portland.
Dorothy was a long-time member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and served on the Bishop’s Advisory Committee when it decided to pursue the creation of William Temple House North.
We will miss Dorothy and her dedication to the children of the Portland community. Her efforts and her magnificent hats will not be forgotten.
