We are thrilled to share our updated mission, vision, and values statements with you. These statements are the result of input from diverse stakeholders—including our clients, volunteers, donors, Thrift Store shoppers, staff, and Board of Directors—with fine-tuning by our Strategic Planning Committee. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this important undertaking over the past several months! Our new mission, vision, and values reflect who we are today and our exciting future ahead.

Vision

Everyone in our community is fully nourished—emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

Mission

William Temple House provides food, counseling, clothing, and household items to Portland-area neighbors to strengthen our community.

Values

We are committed to realizing the following values in all aspects of our work:

  • Affirmation. We affirm the worth and dignity of all people. We listen and respond with respect and compassion.
  • Equity and Justice. In the pursuit of social justice, we stand with each other. We lift up our clients’ voices, stories, and strengths – and center these perspectives in our work.
  • Adaptability. We reflect and adapt our services to meet our clients’ priorities. We lead through collaboration and culturally relevant evidence-based approaches.
  • Sustainability. We believe in the importance of sustaining the human spirit and advancing environmental justice.

Key Strategies

  1. Strive to create a comforting place that is open and inviting to all.
  2. Offer free and low-cost, culturally sensitive counseling to individuals, people in relationships, and families of all kinds.
  3. Offer free and nutritious food and other essential items to meet each person’s unique needs.
  4. Proactively and thoughtfully assist clients in accessing desired resources in our area
  5. Offer low-cost, gently-used clothing, furniture, and household items and earn revenue to support our services through the William Temple House Thrift Store.
  6. Work together with our clients, volunteers, partners, donors, and funders to support our community and advocate for equity and justice
  7. Provide clinical training for the next generation of mental health professionals while supporting them in working with our clients.
