Food shortages have hit William Temple House just as they are hitting
agencies across the country that distribute food to those in need.
Our shelves are especially low on staples such as:
- Rice
- Beans
- Pasta
- Canned stew, chili and soups
- Canned fruit
- Peanut butter
- Juice
- Nuts
Donations may be dropped off at William Temple House in northwest Portland Monday

William Temple House is experiencing increased demand for food from families
who are trying to weather increases in fuel, utility and housing costs,
medical expenses not covered by insurance and decreases in work hours.
At the same time, William Temple House is feeling the affects of a nationwide
decline in food available to food pantries and social service agencies. Reductions in
government subsidies for corn and other grains grown for food and a new emphasis
on growing corn for biofuels have decreased the supply of these important staples.
Higher fuel costs have substantially increased food transportation expenses and
also contribute to the shortages. In addition, as food processors develop
more efficient inventory and delivery systems there is less excess food to
distribute to those in need.
After carefully weighing the alternatives,
the Board of Directors of William Temple House has unanimously decided to sell the agency’s Northwest Hoyt Street
headquarters property.
The Board on June 22, 2007 authorized the
sale of the Mackenzie House and Abbott Hall. Board members believe that the decision allows William Temple House
to fulfill its primary mission of serving the community with counseling and social services and protects the financial
stability of the agency.
