Our Mission

William Temple House restores hope and renews strength in individuals and families in a welcoming and respectful atmosphere.

Hope
Hope is the feeling that what is wanted can be obtained. Hope relates to motivation and will.

Strength
Strength is showing ability, competence, power or courage (can be physical, mental, emotional or spiritual). Strength relates to capacity and skill.

Welcoming
Welcoming is receiving a person gladly. Welcoming relates to treating each person as a brother/sister human being–not a case, a client, a diagnosis, a problem.

Respectful
Respectful means showing a person that he/she is held in esteem. Respectful relates to recognizing the essential dignity and value of each human being.

Allen was raised and educated in Iowa. He is a Stanford University graduate, class of 1972, psychology major. He pursued graduate studies in psychology at the University of Iowa and the University of California, Berkeley. His graduate work in Business Administration was done at Golden Gate University, University of California, Berkeley, and California Pacific University.

Allen came to William Temple House from Network Behavioral HealthCare, where he was director of outpatient services. He also served as Executive Director of Waverly Children’s Home and Rosemont School, all in Portland, Oregon. Prior to moving to Oregon in 1984, Allen directed two human service programs in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Allen has a passion for human services that focuses on service access, respect, integrity, and quality. He is a team and alliance builder who fosters broad participation from colleagues, volunteers and employees. He believes in customer-driven visioning and strategic planning that involves all stakeholders.

Dr. Susan Bettis, Clinical Director of Counseling

Dr. Bettis has spearheaded the growth of the Mental Health Counseling Department. She established William Temple House’s Internship Program as a site for graduate level interns to complete their state required hours of counseling for licensure. Today the Internship Program offers 16-18 graduate level students an exclusive opportunity to receive excellent supervision, career independence, weekly training and continuing education.
